History

Our Department, which enabled folklore studies in Turkey to gain a new dimension in the academic environment, was established under the initiatives and leadership of Prof. Dr. Dursun Yıldırım. As a result of Prof. Dr. Dursun Yıldırım's report titled "General Information about Folklore and 33 Thoughts on the Establishment of the Folklore Department in Our Universities" submitted to the Higher Education Institution and the discussions he initiated at the 1st National Culture Council, the Higher Education Institution has appointed Turkish Folklore to provide education at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels in universities. It was decided to open departments. With this decision, the Department of Turkish Folklore, which was established under the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in 1982, started its education life. Our Department, which is the first and model of Turkish Folklore Departments and departments opened in many universities today, is seen as a center where many valuable academicians are trained. Since 2013, the Department of Turkish Folklore has been continuing its education process as an independent department that continues its educational activities at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels among the academic units of Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters. Our department continues its education and training activities with 5 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 doctoral faculty member and 2 research assistants.
